Clean Development Machanism in Pakistan

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a market-based flexible mechanism under the Kyoto protocol that allow industrialized countries (Annex I countries) to meet their carbon emissions targets through trading of emission allowances generated by projects abroad (non-Annex I countries).

Practically it means that projects located in countries under development and reducing Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) are potentially eligible to earn carbon credits which can be traded with an Annex-I buyer bringing an additional revenue stream to finance the project and hence increasing the IRR of the project.
CDM opens new opportunities to develop projects that would not be (as) viable without the carbon credits and has the potential to:

  • Improve local waste management practices (e.g. disposal of waste through composting or combustion, landfill gas recovery etc.)
  • Support the use of renewable energy (production of heat/electricity from biomass, biogas, solar, wind, hydro)
  • Energy efficiency (cogeneration, efficient chillers, energy saving lamps, heat recovery)

After a slow starts, the Clean Development Mechanism enjoys now a large success with over 700 projects registered (as on 01/07/07).
